Liebster Award

In a break from my usual confectionery posting, I am writing to respond to the recent nomination I received for the Liebster Award from fellow blogger My Year of CupcakesThank you so much for thinking of me!

What is a Liebster Award, you ask?  The description below comes from We Loved Here:

The Liebster Award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers. So, what is a Liebster?  The meaning: Liebster is German and means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. Isn’t that sweet? Blogging is about building a community and it’s a great way to connect with other bloggers and help spread the word about newer bloggers/blogs.

This is so fun!  I love supporting fellow bloggers and it’s always nice to get a “like” or a comment from someone to know your blog put a smile on their face today!

Rules:

  • Link to the person who nominated you
  • Answer their questions
  • Nominate new blogs for the award
  • Ask them 10 new questions
  • Let the nominees know they have been nominated

My Answers:

What made you want to start your blog?

I love to bake, and I wanted to encourage myself to bake more and develop my skills.  I am very goal-oriented, so making a blog gave me a sense of accountability.  If I don’t practice my baking skills and bake things, I will have nothing to post on my blog.  Also, I love to write, and don’t get to do that much as a research scientist!

Who is your hero?

Cliché, but, I have to go with my mom.  It’s just the way it is.

What city, country or continent have you always wanted to visit?

I want to go everywhere, really.  If I had to pick one place right now, I’d say Australia…or Greece.  See!  I can’t do it!

When you were a kid, what did you dream of being when you grew up?

I guess I wanted to be a teacher…like my mommy!  🙂  Really original, I know.

What, in your opinion, is your strongest skill or ability?

Hmm, this is a tough one…someday, maybe it will be baking and decorating.  Today, I’d have to say it’s my organizational and planning skills.  I love plans…and spreadsheets (straight-up enginerd here).  It’s these attributes that make me reliable and dependable, whether it be on-the-job, or in my social life.  I think my family, friends, and coworkers recognize and value this…at least I hope they do!

What is your favorite book?  Why?

The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.  I love the sweetness and brutal honesty of the Little Prince, and the beautiful and sad truths he comments on throughout the book.  You can’t help but fall in love with Le Petit Prince.  He is timeless, moving, and philosophical…I also love all the Harry Potter books.  A lot.  For so many reasons.  They are magical.

What inspires you?

Lately, I am inspired by people who do what they love.  From the ‘starving artist’ just making it and waiting tables to pursue his dream, to my coworker who just really loves lithium ion batteries (cannot understand how); to rock stars, and political junkies working tirelessly and seemingly endlessly for their cause (shout out to Megahad!).  Congratulations to you.  You inspire me to reach for my dreams and find what I love and make it my job.  Life’s too short.  I hope to get there one day.

What is your favorite comfort food?

My favorite comfort food is mac n cheese…or marshmallows…depending on if I am feeling in a sugary mood or not.  Pair those with The Notebook, and comfort is instantaneous.

Do you have a favorite season of the year?  If so, which one?

I used to love summer the most.  Then spring.  Now, I love fall.  I think it’s a sign that I am growing up.  To love the fall is to see and love the beauty in our world.  The colors, the flavors, the smells (the baked goods), and of course, breaking out my boots which have endured a long spring and summer waiting to be reunited with me!

Who is your favorite band or singer?

Anyone who knows me can answer this:  Taylor Swift.  Yes, I am 25 years old and I love Taylor Swift.  I jam out to her in the car, have lost track of how many T-Swift t-shirts I own, and have seen every one of her tours.  I love her, and I have no shame in admitting it.

  1. Wow! Thank you for the nomination! It is my first blog award! 😮 I’ve looked through your posts, and you do some wonderful baking! Looking forward to seeing what you bake in the future!

  2. Hi there, I just wanted to thank you again for nominating my blog, http://spoonsandmoons.wordpress.com. It’s very kind of you! 🙂

I haven’t had the chance to really look through your entries yet, but your blog looks wonderful, and your baking decorations are just Wow with a capital W. Do you mind if I ask you how long you’ve been baking and how long it took you to get to this stage? Decorating is so not one of my fortes, and I would love to be better at it. 😀

    • Oh thank you! I really haven’t been doing it that long! I really started baking about a year and a half ago, when a woman who now has a small home baking business (mainly made-to-order sugar cookies for special occasions) taught me all about how to decorate sugar cookies with royal icing. I stuck to those for a while, getting more complicated as I went, and then earlier this year, I made a goal of one baked good per week so I could start getting better and expand my baking repertoire. I started taking cake decorating classes in the spring (just short 4-week classes at an art supply store), and really love it! And before I knew it, my best friend was engaged and I was making her wedding cake! The best is if you can find someone to teach you some insider secrets. Make baking friends, and work your way into their kitchen! Youtube is also great for decorating. I’ve never thought of myself as an artistic person, but when it comes to baking a decorating, it’s just different. It takes patience and attention to detail, really. It is so rewarding to see your beautifully decorated finished product. Just start practicing and looking up pictures on the internet to copy (I love Pinterest!). You’ll be a pro before you know it. I look forward to seeing how your decorating skills improve! I know I still have sooooo much to learn, but once I made my best friend’s wedding cake I realized, I can DO this!
